the rio ferdinand foundation website reports:
The Rio Ferdinand Foundation team are excited to announce Heather Small as an ambassador to the music industry for our charity.
Heather has a long and successful career as the lead singer of M People and as a solo artist, with songs such as ‘Moving On Up’, ‘One Night in Heaven’, ‘Search for the Hero’ and the Olympic anthem ‘Proud’, alongside media work on shows such as Strictly Come Dancing and Comic Relief sealing her place in the public eye.
Heather has long been a social activist, representing and speaking out on issues close to her heart. She joins the Foundation initially to support our forthcoming youth-led movement supporting young people to bring communities together and tackle racism. The programme will be delivered in partnership with Music Against Racism, and Heather will help to shape our grassroots work with young people and amplify their message.
In her first act as an ambassador for the Rio Ferdinand Foundation, Heather has teamed up with producer Lol Hammond to record a new track entitled ‘United Together’ to support this work with a percentage of royalties donated to deliver training and leadership programmes for young people.
Heather says:
“Growing up on estate in West London, I understand the challenges life can present to young people and often the lack of opportunities to achieve their potential. The opportunity to link up with an organisation such as the Rio Ferdinand Foundation, that delivers training and social progression while also tackling inequalities presented by class, race and culture is fantastic as it speaks to several issues close to my heart. I look forward to working with Rio and the team to raise awareness and deliver change in the coming months and years.”
Gary Stannett, CEO of the Rio Ferdinand Foundation says:
“We are proud to welcome Heather on board as a part of our team of Ambassadors and Advocates. Heather’s journey, success and songs speak directly to the young people and families we are working with, and her reach and networks in the music industry will offer a unique insight into many careers for young people. Heather’s presence in our upcoming partnership and campaign with Music Against Racism to create a fairer and more equitable society will be a great boost to our work.”
